Problem:
On Windows 10, the two entries below describe behavior sometimes encountered when using the 'Recent Items' folder option in 'Quick Access'.
- The 'Recent files' section under 'Frequent folders' is missing entirely in 'Quick Access'.
- The option to 'Show recently used files in Quick access' under the 'Privacy' section of 'Folder Options' does not remain enabled after applying the change and closing the window.
- File entries listed under the 'Recent files' section seem random and don't accurately reflect files that were most recently opened.
Possible Resolution(s):
- To resolve the first and second issues, open 'Windows Settings' and from the 'Home' area, navigate to 'Personalization' and then click 'Start', listed under 'Personalization' on the left-hand side. Enable what should be the bottom setting, 'Show recently opened items in Jump List on Start or the Taskbar'. The 'Recent Files' section should now be visible in 'Quick Access'. If 'File Explorer' is already opened to 'Quick Access', refresh the page to see the change.
- Resolving the third issue can be accomplished by performing the same steps as above. However, the 'Show recently opened items in Jump List on Start or the Taskbar' should already be enabled. Simply disable and re-enable the option to resolve the issue. By doing so, the entries, or cache, for 'Recent Files' is essentially cleared. If 'File Explorer' is already opened to 'Quick Access', refresh the page to see the change.
'Recent files' should now be visible in 'Quick Access'.
