Description
ProfileUnity is typically deployed using a GPO Startup policy. For Windows devices that do not connect to the network until after a user has authenticated, GPO Startup scripts may not run. In the absence of standard software distribution tools such as SMS, SCCM, LANDesk, etc., Liquidware Labs recommends using PsTools, an open source tool, to distribute and install software to machines on the network. This document provides instructions on how to use PsTools to install the ProfileUnity Client Tools.
Prerequisites
- Administrative credentials to install software on machines on the domain or on the network.
- List of DNS names or IP Addresses of target machines where the ProfileUnity Client Tools need to be installed or uninstalled.
- Shared network location with appropriate read/write/execute permissions to access, copy and run the ProfileUnity Client Tools - Default location is "NETLOGON\ProfileUnity".
- Acquire the "PsTools_Installation_Files.zip" attached.
- Extract "PsTools.zip" and "FePsTools.zip" from "PsTools_Installation_Files.zip" on the local machine - All extracted files must be in the same folder and not subfolders.
- Modify Installation Batch File
- Edit "installClientTools.bat" by replacing <shared location> with the full path location of ProfileUnity Client Tools (Default location is "NETLOGON\ProFileUnity").
- Save the install batch file.
- Modify Uninstallation Batch File
- Edit "uninstallClientTools.bat" by replacing "<shared location>" with the full path location of ProfileUnity Client Tools (Default location is "NETLOGON\ProFileUnity").
- Save the uninstall batch file.
Configuring FePsTools
Option 1 - Deployment To Multiple Machines
- Run "FePsTools.exe" extracted from "PsTools.zip" listed in "Prerequisites" above by selecting "Navigate to File", "Settings", "Browse" and navigating to the extracted executable.
- Clicking "Browse" under "Use Computer List" and select the extracted "ComputerList.txt" from Step 5 of "Prerequisites" above.
- Click "Edit" and enter the list of fully qualified domain names (DNS) for the machines where the ProfileUnity Client Tools are to be installed.
- Similar to Example - Enter administrative credentials in "Username" and "Password" fields to be used for installation of the Client Tools.
Option 2 - Deployment To A Single Machine
- Uncheck the box next to "Use Computer List" and enter the designated machine’s fully qualified domain name in the "Computer" field.
- Enter administrative credentials in "Username" and "Password" fields to be used for installation of the Client Tools.
Additional Configuration
- Enable "Accept Eula".
- Under "Program" , click "Browse" and select either "installClientTools.bat" or "uninstallClientTools.bat" configured in the "Prerequisites" sections above - It is recommended to set the “Working directory” to “C:\”
- Uncheck all other options in the lower portion of the "Program".
- Enable the “Copy program” and “Overwrite” options under "Copy".
- Enable the “Don’t wait” option under "Process".
FePsTools is now configured and ready to install the Client Tools on target computer list or machine.
To begin the installation process, click the gear shaped button at the top left of the application to run the distribution.
Once started, you can view messages within the pane at the bottom of the window. It will scroll through all the machines in the ComputerList.txt file before stopping.
